Injury Prevention
Goal:
The goal of the injury prevention element of the T.A. Health Program is to reduce death, acute and long-term disability due to injuries among First Nations. When discussing "Injury Prevention", the program is mainly referring to unintentional injuries.
Objective:
The objective is to increase awareness of the conditions of the risk, which affects the community children and families and to develop accessible services that will provide a continuum of care, which may include promotion, prevention, treatment, support, and aftercare.
Focus:
- Elevating the priority given to injury prevention on the part of families and communities, health workers and governments at all levels;
- Identifying, through data collection at the community level, the main types of injuries in each geographical area;
- To ensure on-going training of human services workers in the area of injury prevention;
- Developing a range of age appropriate educational materials suitable for First Nations and each type of causative agent (motor vehicles, fire, water, etc.)
- Promoting community-based educational programs; carrying out mass media campaigns within each community or group of communities; integrating interventions with existing programs as much as possible;
- The development of appropriate legislation by First Nations communities directed at injury prevention, and;
- The establishment of injury prevention as regular, comprehensive preventive program within First Nation communities.
