Goal:
The goal of Tootinaowaziibeeng Anishinabe Health community is to encourage, support, and maintain the well-being of children, individuals, families, and communities through a community-determined approach.
Objective:
The objective of the Mental Health program are based on the four main areas:
Intervention in the community: These activities should be designed to enable quick, co-ordinated response to the crisis, such as suicides and other crises that traumatize First Nation communities
Training: Access to training that is culturally sensitive could be provided for community members to enable communities to prepare for crisis, to assist in crisis intervention, to identify the early warning signs of individuals at risk, and to mobilize available resources that can assist those affected by the crisis or those re-integrating into the community.
Postvention: Aftercare and rehabilitation activities could be designed to help communities continue with the healing process in the aftermath of a crisis. Activities could include counselling programs, follow-up treatment, and community education and awareness of the nature of mental health, mental illness, and the conditions of individuals returning to the community.
Crisis Response Plans: Development of crisis management response plans (including contingency funding for urgent, unforeseen needs, evaluation etc.).
Focus:
- Appropriate and adequate community resources and programs to deal with community mental health and child wellness issues;
- A range of services which could include: referrals, intervention, prevention, counselling, treatment and aftercare support services;
- Increased level of practice and awareness among community members of successful approaches to maintaining mental wellness, positive family relations, interpersonal communication, community relations, and positive self-identity;
- Initiatives which address, in conjunction with other programs, the current high rate of suicide, homicides, acts of family violence, delinquency rates and hospitalization-institutionalization rates; and
- Training, cultural orientation and support to increase the knowledge and skills of individuals involved in service delivery within First Nations communities.
