Prenatal
Goal:
The goal of the Prenatal Nutrition Program is to encourage, support, and maintain the well-being of children, individuals, families, and communities through a community-determined approach.
Objective:
The objective of the prenatal program is to increase awareness on Fetal, Infant, Child Development and Parenting issues, while improving maternal and infant nutritional health with a particular focus on those at high risk of complications.
Focus:
- Nutrition screening for pregnant women participating in the program;
Maternal Nourishment:
- Food voucher program, cooking classes and/or meal in a bag program for prenatal women and women up to one year postnatal.
Breast-Feeding Promotion and Support:
- Information sessions held for prenatal women to include benefits of breast-feeding;
- Supportive activities such as raising community awareness regarding support and acceptance of breast-feeding, radio programs, support programs and guest speakers;
Healthy Babies
- Community education
- Development of community-based monitoring and data collection in all areas of this component
- Examining the need for counselling to prospective parents regarding birth defects
- The development and/or enhancement of community-based maternal and child health programs
- Programs to promote healthy lifestyle behaviours that improve maternal and child health
